Also, "beauty is in the eye of the beholder." It doesn't have to be "beautiful" in the traditional sense of being aesthetically pretty. Beauty can be many things to a person. I think we often find beauty in things fitting together in a certain poetic way, or when something is expressed elegantly. I think in order for a person to consider something art, he/she has to find some sort of beauty in it on some level, which could perhaps also be defined as that connection between the piece and the viewer that Joel mentioned.
