Whenever someone asks for recommendations for movies that they might not have otherwise looked twice at, I usually recommend Vanilla Sky.

I know what you're thinking. "That chick flick with nutjob Tom Cruise? You're on crack." But I watched it with my mom with the expectation of it being a total boring chick flick and it turned out to have a twist at the end that, well, now that we DO know what a nutjob Tom Cruise is, maybe isn't so surprising anymore. Still a much better movie than the chick flick it appears to be, especially if you can tolerate chick flicks anyway. Not sure how your other half will feel about it.

Thank You For Not Smoking, however, is great and always worth a rent.

Left in Darkness - not worth renting, but if you catch it on the Sci-Fi channel, it's better than most crappy Sci-Fi channel movies (which are usually cliche disaster flicks).
