I think what Kandil was trying to say is that most people who are middle class still end their lives as middle class.

While I don't think most people do have the chance to move out of being Middle Class, the standard for being middle class has increased if anything over the years. Ask yourself, are you more well off than you were when you were a child? Do you have more 'things' and a better place to live? I certainly do, I definitely have more toys, for whatever they are worth. How would someone gauge moving out of middle class? A lexus? A six thousand square foot house? A giant pool in the back? Yeesh all that sounds like a pain in the butt to me.

As far as the early 20th century goes, I don't think anyone would want a return to the lawlessness of the 1800's and early 1900's regarding industry, and that's what it was, lawlessness. It was criminal what was done to workers then, that wasn't a 'free' market, it was a corruption of the soul. That was corrected with laws regarding personal rights, not restricting businesses (except in Monopolies eh?). But make no mistake it was no worse than what went on before then always, we have made incredible strides toward making the world a better place in the last century, and we still have a long way to go.

Market's should be freer, companies should fall, no one should be 'bailed out' by the government, including telco's, banking, airlines, automotives, farming and . Any of it. It props up the wrong behavior in a market. It is like a parent allowing their kid to have free reign with candy, while giving your kid candy now will keep them from crying right now, it will make them cry more when they weigh 950 pounds and can't get a date to prom.

Currently, the economy can't get a date to prom.
