A little about small business.

First, in my opinion, big business is Socialistic in nature and small business is Capitalist in nature. I think that a reasonable look at the goodies offered by big business to it's employees and at the cradle to grave type of expectations people have of their inclusion in it (that is complex and is in part a consequence of people expecting to automatically get a job upon earning a degree).

So, when government messes with the tax code they tend to hurt small business and favor big business. As well, when government places regulations on business it tends to hurt small business and help big business.

Now, keep in mind that politicians are invested in businesses. Nancy Pelosi for instance is heavily invested in the T. Boone Pickens water way/air power scam in the Pan Handle of Texas. I suspect that all of this 'green' technology stuff is rife with political investors. So, you can't trust what politicians say about business, Right or Left, although you can somewhat depend on general political culture (low taxes/high taxes, low regulations/high regulations).

Monopolies are created by the government, not business. When some wonk tells you how bad run away capitalism was at the turn of the last century, he or she is misleading you. Yes, business will take advantage of bad law, but the problem is bad law. I believe that all monopolies are a function of bad law. I believe that mega-corporations are a function of bad law as well. I think that given an origin at near parity, competition will stabilize and prevent consolidation of capital into monopolies and quasi-monopolies.

So, when some goofball politician starts talking about adjusting the tax code, they are talking about rigging the game in the favor of big business. When they start talking about increasing regulations, they are talking about the same thing. Don't fall from this crap. There isn't a big pile of money they can grab out of and give to you. When they say they are going to snag some richpeople tax and grease your palm so you are kissey with them on election day, don't go for it. All they do is reduce the level of competition and in so doing reduce the actual amount of financial activity and thence the amount of money to be had. If you are like the average American, too lazy to do more than ask some hard working, creative, enterprising, person for a job, don't think you are getting ahead. You aren't. That small business owner of whom you are jealous is out there creating the lucre that he pays you so you can feed little Jenny and Jeffy.

Joel.
